Things to do outside of Wilmington, NC

Wilmington is a great city and I love living here. There is so much to do and I never get bored. Sometimes though you just want to explore new towns so that is why I like to take day trips and see what else is out there. Wilmington is in a prime location and is next to a lot of fun towns. here is a list of things to do outside of Wilmington, NC.

Holden Beach

Holden beach is about 45 minutes-1 hour away from Wilmington. While driving there you will not pass much besides bare land and Leland. Holden beach seems to be like a smaller Wilmington but quieter. There is a water park there, beach shops like “Wings”, small local restaurants, and Jet Ski rentals. Whenever I go to Holden Beach I always love to rent jet skis at Holden beach jet ski rentals on 1305 Cedar Landing Rd SW, Supply, NC because they have the best service and prices. My favorite part of Holden Beach is the bridge that crosses over the Intracoastal waterway because it offers such a beautiful view of the coast.

If you are looking to get away from the coast and go to the big city then Raleigh will be a great place to visit. Raleigh is about 3 hours from Wilmington and you just ride straight down I-40 to get there. There are plenty of places to stop for food and atmosphere between Raleigh and Wilmington. Raleigh is filled with plenty of unique bars and places to eat. My favorite bar is the “Boxcar Arcade” where you can order beverages and play arcade games at the same time, which is a blast. If you do not want to spend money then you can always walk around the city and see all the great architecture that it has to offer. My favorite part of Raleigh is the museums of art, history, and natural science. These museums are free and will provide so much entertainment for all ages.

Oak Island/Southport

These two towns are about an hour away from Wilmington. They are two different towns but they are very close and almost the same. There is not much to do in either town but they both have a beach and a sleepy vibe to them if you are looking to just relax and get away from a city. South Port is full of historic housing so it is fun to walk around and see the nice houses. If you like thrift stores then South Port has plenty of those to walk around and go inside. South Port also has a ferry that you can pay to ride to Baldhead Island. Bald Head Island is a small community with no cars and offers restaurants, gift stores, bike rentals, golf course, and lots of events.

Myrtle Beach

The crazy stories that you have heard about Myrtle Beach are probably all true. Myrtle Beach has two different seasons; tourist season and off-season. During the summer, Myrtle Beach is a booming city with all kinds of nightlife and day life that does not stop. If you plan to visit here during the summer then you will probably want to be young and ready for anything. This is a very fast-paced town which will be filled with all kinds of different people. There are restaurants, mini golf, outside malls, bars, clubs, beach shops, and much more that you can enjoy. Myrtle Beach has been identified as a very popular vacation destination in the United States, so check it out during the summer if you want the vacationer’s vibe. During the off-season, Myrtle Beach becomes a ghost town and half the city will be shut down because there is not enough tourism to sustain everything. If there is anybody still left in the city then it will probably be your local population.
